MAIHE Coordinator (Learning Specialist), Accessibility Services

MCCC Unit Professional position, Grade 5

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9-5, occasional evening and weekend hours

Primary Campus: Lynn & Danvers campus, Individual must be able to travel between campuses for work and events as well at to attend state wide meeting

GENERAL STATEMEMT OF DUTIES:

The MAIHE Program Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of coordinating and implementing the Massachusetts Inclusive Higher Education initiative, Partnership Program. The coordinator is the primary contact between the student, the family, college faculty and staff, the partnering school systems and State agencies as well as the educational coaches supporting the students on campus.

Performs activities and the delivery of services as a team member of the College's Accessibility Services Department. Works to ensure MAIHE students have appropriate accommodations surrounding access to college programs, activities, and services. Reviews/interprets medical documentation, and evaluates diagnostic information for students with varying disabilities to determine, as a team member, the eligibility for protection under Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment (ADAAA), Section 504, and other applicable legislation.

Conducts student intake interviews with MAIHE students to determine eligibility and reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable laws and policies.

Assists current and potential MAIHE students with disabilities in the planning and implementing their educational, career and personal goals and objectives in collaboration with sending high schools/State agencies. Provides academic guidance and advocacy skill development to MAIHE students as they participate in the postsecondary setting.

Interacts with various agencies/individuals (i.e. - attends meetings and serves on committees; represents the department to the public; collaborates with other college divisions and personnel; provides mediation and conflict resolution between faculty/staff and students; communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, students, faculty members, the public, other academic institutions, funding agencies, state/federal agencies, vocational rehabilitation agencies, human service agencies, outside agencies, and other individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate all MAIHE Program (Massachusetts Inclusive Higher Education) activities and develop comprehensive academic and co-curricular supports for high school students in transition (ages 18-22 who meet the criteria of MAIHE) and persons over 21 with severe disabilities, including intellectual disability, autism, and other developmental disabilities who are working with State agencies to promote access to campus live and college coursework in an inclusive setting.
  • Participate, as the College's representative, on all person-centered planning activities for incoming MAIHE students in collaboration with the sending high schools/special education departments and State agencies
  • Collaborate with the high school transition/employment specialist and community workforce/employment options to obtain and maintain quality work consistent with the student's vocational goals.
  • Interact with college departments and resources, community adult services agencies and high school liaisons and special education departments.
  • Consult with educational coaches and high school liaison regarding instructional needs of students.
  • Coordinate and participate, as lead staff, in the recruitment, admissions and orientation of incoming MAIHE students. This includes developing and updating program materials, coordinating orientation programs and campus visits.
  • Consult with students, faculty, administrators and other campus personnel regarding students' instructional needs, academic accommodations and assistive technology needs.
  • Meets with students and parents to select courses and activities that best match the students' interest. Assist students with course selection and registration.
  • Provide professional development and training to college faculty and staff to promote the inclusion and success of MAIHE students in the college community and promote universal design in the college curriculum.
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with the MAIHE program. This would include collecting and reporting of statistical data and analysis, coordinating community partnerships team meetings and maintaining confidential student files.
  • Responsible for the management of the grant funds associated with the MAIHE grant.
  • Coordinate with the sending districts/State agencies and NSCC college personnel from necessary departments on the creation of an annual Memorandum of Agreement.
  • Conducts intake interviews with accepted MAIHE students to evaluate and interpret diagnostic and medical documentation to determine eligibility of reasonable accommodations.
  • Provides academic, vocational, and social counseling by maintaining an active caseload of students with disabilities.
  • Works closely with the Assistive Technology personnel in providing the appropriate delivery of assistive/adaptive technology services and accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Maintains knowledge of current disability laws to ensure compliance; makes ADAAA recommendations to the college; serves on college committees and task forces related to accessibility, accommodations, and advocacy for students with disabilities.
  • Consults and serves as resource to college community especially faculty regarding reasonable accommodations for MAIHE students.
  • Participates in relevant professional development opportunities to stay up to date with trends, legal precedence, etc.
  • Participates in and supports College events including, and not limited to: open houses, college fairs and high school visits
  • Develop and/or update program materials and website.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Masters degree in special education, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field required.
  • At least three years of experience working with young adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism or developmental disabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 & Section 508.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of accomplishment as a team player.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) a plus.
  • Experience utilizing an integrated computerized system; BANNER preferred.
  • Must have excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with ethnic, cultural, and socially diverse student populations.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI background check as a condition of employment.

Additional Information:

SALARY: Anticipated starting prorated salary is $38,546.52 - $47,384.62 for 44 weeks per year. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement.
