We have an exciting opportunity for a Machine Learning Intern to join our team with the Science & Exploration Division.

This is a temporary role not to exceed 10 weeks.

Responsibilities:

  • The Machine Learning Intern will provide support to the Earth & Exploration Science (EES) team on machine learning projects. The EES team develops machine learning and deep learning neural networks on object based and imagery segmentation projects related to NASA's International Space Station and Artemis missions. EES expertise include Earth, planetary, computational, and image science. Internship is offered in person in Houston, TX at NASA Johnson Space
  • Center. Machine learning can serve as a tool to automatically identify certain features through object detection and segmentation in imagery and video. The neural network procedure requires the development of training data that must be classified by hand to train neural networks, which can then be used to search the rest of the image set for areas of interest. Intern responsibilities would include Preparing training images for neural networks to enable detection and/or categorization of areas of interest; Identifying and labeling the areas of interest; and development of deep learning models using computer vision techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Project Objective and expected goals

  • The intern will learn to work with imagery of spaceflight materials and geospatial information, produce a set of labeled training images, develop neural networks to identify features and objects in imagery, and contribute their developed model into the greater hierarchical model tree. The intern will provide a report as well as any source code generated to add a core capability in machine vision-based feature detection.
Here’s What You’ll Need:


Requisition Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited university.
  • Completed at least 45 credit hours.
  • Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
  • Good analytical skills, with the ability to work independently while functioning within a team environment
  • Project or classroom experience with deep learning or computer vision projects
  • Students should have an interest in imaging or planetary science as well as computational science, computer vision, or machine learning.
  • Some knowledge of Differential Equations and Linear Algebra is desirable. Experience with python or another coding language is a plus.

Requisition Preferences:

  • MS student pursing a degree in computer science, data science or a related field

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
