McLaughlin Research Institute is a center for neurogenetic research on Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other degenerative nerve diseases. MRI is currently seeking a Caretaker. This position is responsible for routine care of all research mice.

As a direct report to the Animal Resource Center (ARC) Director, this position is an active job, involving standing, walking and occasionally lifting supplies weighing as much as 35 pounds.

Being empathetic, organized, disciplined, and having careful attention to details are skills valued for this position. Applicants should be comfortable with computers since MRI is moving towards paperless data collection using PC, Mac, and iPads within the animal rooms.

Although most of the time caretakers work alone in individual animal rooms, there is a lot of interaction among all ARC and science staff. All caretakers are supported by senior technicians, our on-site veterinarian and the ARC director.

As a critical component of MRI’s ARC team, this position must be able to communicate effectively verbally, be able to effectively organize and manage time, and have reliable transportation to and from McLaughlin Research Institute. McLaughlin Research Institute is located at 1520 23rd St. S, (behind Albertsons) and is on the Great Falls City Bus line.

Job Roles

  • Changing soiled cages and replacing water bottles. This task is 75% of the time spent at work
  • Daily monitor animal well-being.
  • Daily treatment of common health conditions with routine communication with ARC director and on-site veterinarian.
  • Restock animal rooms.
  • Sanitize animal rooms on scheduled basis.
  • Other duties as needed.

Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED

This is a Full-Time Hourly (40 Hours / Week) position with 100% of work being done onsite. Schedule is flexible, available hours are 6am-6pm, Monday through Friday, 4 day work week can be scheduled.

Ability to walk, lift, and carry up to 35 pounds at a time over short distances.

Ability to work independently while actively participating in a team-centered atmosphere.

Compensation:

No experience: $15.00 / Hr.

1 year Vivarium experience: $16.20 /Hr starting wage

8 paid federal holidays, with additional paid vacation time.
