This position is responsible for submitting insurance claims, obtaining health insurance pre-authorizations, billing, and collections for all of the interdisciplinary programs operating within the Institute for Well Being, including but not limited to the Speech Language Center, the Hearing & Balance Center, The Occupational Therapy Center and the Hussman Center for Adults with Autism. This person is responsible for resolving billing and claims issues and/or appeals in a timely manner. Responsible for collecting payments, tracking revenues and entering deposits into the University system and monitoring of on-line payment.

Responsibilities and Duties

This position is responsible for reviewing insurance claims, submitting claims through the clearinghouse, following up with insurance companies and ensure claims are processed/paid within acceptable timeframe. Review, appeal and attach required documentation on claims to ensure maximum reimbursements. Collect payment for services and use established auditing procedures to record payments, including tracking insurance payments, credit card payments, and check payments. Prepare daily deposits and enter into Towson University deposit management system daily. Collect health insurance or billing information for all clients receiving services or attending programs at the Institute for Well-Being. Review and determine health insurance coverage for therapeutic, audiology and other services. Obtain prior authorizations. Work with external representative for client participation and collection of payment for hearing aids provided through the Lions Association for Sight & Hearing (LASH) program and other specialized programs offering assistance through various organizations. Review patient statements for accuracy prior to distribution and distribute on a monthly basis. Create and monitor payment plans with clients needing assistance with outstanding balance. Run regular reports and follow-up on unpaid and unbilled claims and services. Provide front desk coverage when needed to assist with office team. Provide direct assistance in-person, by phone and e-mail to clients with billing, insurance coverage and other patient concerns. Maintain compliance with HIPAA laws for patient confidentiality. Support the Institute for Well-Being and College of Health Professions with other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience performing a full range of clerical support services to include one year coordination work and one year in a medical setting.
  • Certified Professional Medical Billing & Coding Required.
  • Requires knowledge of medical billing, medical coding, medical terminology, insurance plans, claim terminology, and professional credentialing process. Seeking employee with excellent computer skills including use of medical billing software, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and good data entry skills.
  • Familiar with establishing and following basic accounting and billing principles.
  • Knowledge of business office procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to interact well with customers who have disabilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment..

Preferred:
  • Bachelors degree

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Salary and Benefits

$39,232 annually and full University benefits that include annual leave, up to 14 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission. Applicants with TU or USM service may receive salary credit.
