  • GIS Analyst II - B20 Salary Range $45,158.00 - $73,788.00
  • GIS Analyst III - B22 Salary Range $51,614.00 - $84,479.00

Position Description


Performs complex geographic information systems (GIS) data development, integration and analysis, produces maps and graphics, and extracts, analyzes and reports data. Provides technical assistance and support of transportation related activities or projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

GIS Analyst I

  • Collects, prepares, digitizes and codes spatial data into GIS format.
  • Conducts mapping research to ensure accurate use of data and resolve conflicting information.
  • Creates, maintains and updates GIS databases and cartographic products using the ESRI suite of ArcGIS software.
  • Researches new software and techniques for improving performance or processes.
  • Converts CAD and other map formats into ArcGIS formats.
  • Generates reports and produces graphic products.
  • Interprets source documents, such as engineering plans, plot maps and legal descriptions.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

GIS Analyst II

All of the above and:

  • Utilizes ArcGIS Online to create and maintain feature services and web mapping applications.
  • Reviews geographic data from various sources, including other state agencies, aerial imagery, existing maps, and databases.
  • Assists in the creation of custom tools and applications using Python, HTML/Javascript/CSS, SQL and/or other coding languages.
  • Creates and maintains cartographic products using ArcGIS.
  • Provides support, coordination and advice in the development, implementation and maintenance of projects and programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

GIS Analyst III

All of the above and:

  • May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Develops custom tools and applications using Python, HTML/JavaScript/CSS, SQL and/or other coding languages.
  • Uses linear referencing to update and maintain the roadway network and attributes.
  • Digitizes and maintains roadway line work and attributes, basemap layers, and administrative polygon boundaries.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems or related field. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis.

Experience:

GIS Analyst I:

Experience not required.

GIS Analyst II:

1-year using Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) products in cartographic production, GIS or GPS analysis. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

GIS Analyst II:

2-year using Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) products in cartographic production, GIS or GPS analysis. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license.



Competencies:

GIS Analyst I

  • GIS data collection

GIS Analyst II

  • Surveying/mapping methods, materials and publication procedures
  • Program/project planning, development, and management methodologies
  • Coordinate systems and map projections
  • Developing and giving presentations
  • Analyzing issues, facts, and available information to develop logical solutions; researching inconsistencies of facts or data; drawing correct inferences from information and making recommendations that support business decisions

GIS Analyst III:

All the above and:

  • Applicable computer programming techniques and languages
  • Leading projects and project teams

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10lbs
