Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.

The Eastern Shore Health District is seeking a qualified individual to serve as an Environmental Health Specialist for it's sewage and water permitting and inspections program.

Primary duties for this position are in the Onsite Soils and Water Program with work related to designing, permitting, and inspection of sewage disposal systems and water wells, monitoring of secondary treatment systems, and inspection and abatement of shoreline pollution and other complaints. Protects environmental health through the enforcement of Virginia health laws/regulations.

Employees receive close supervision and guidance. For this position, employees are expected to become certified and maintain license as a DPOR Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE) or DPOR Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE) after VDH furnished training and experience; employee is expected to become licensed within 18 months of employment. Employees are moved to the Environmental Health Specialist Senior position upon successful completion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public as well as other internal/external partners and staff; proficient in basic computer software programs
  • Time management skills necessary in order to meet workload demands
  • Knowledge and/experience in assigned program area
  • Ability to influence behavior of foodservice employees/management, provide services in professional, courteous manner, present educational programs to adults; uses a customer-service oriented approach to assignments and works effectively as a team member
  • Must be able to complete training in the VDH Soils program, and be able to obtain credentials in one of the following within 18 months: DPOR Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE) or DPOR Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE).
  • A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduation from college with a degree related to the duties of the position preferred or equivalent experience in environmental health, such as experience gained as an Environmental Health Associate
