The Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is responsible for the University’s sponsored research functions. The director actively promotes, encourages, and directs proposal development, oversees all areas of research compliance and award management, and advocates for the growth of scholarly activity at Loyola University Maryland.

Position Responsibilities

1. Strategic Direction and Oversight:
  • Support Loyola’s mission and strategic objectives by leading the development of grant proposals that meet institutional priorities, including identifying appropriate opportunities, bringing together stakeholders, crafting strategies for grant acquisition, and overseeing proposal development.
  • Develop and advocate for initiatives that enhance scholarly and grant-seeking capacity. · Provide leadership to office personnel and promote a customer service culture that fosters the growth of faculty applications for external funding.
  • Direct all aspects of the management and operations of the ORSP, including hiring, training, and ensuring professional development of ORSP staff.
  • Determine policies, procedures, training, and outreach appropriate to support research development and administration activities.
  • Determine policies and procedures related to internal review of sponsored programs, working with stakeholders as needed.
  • Liaise with the AVP for Financial Services to ensure appropriate post-award financial policies, procedures, and monitoring are in place.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations to ensure a unified approach to seeking private funders to support faculty interests and the appropriate classification and management of funds received.
  • Determine tracking and reporting needs for departmental monitoring and reporting to leadership.
  • Serve as the primary University liaison to funding agencies.
  • Exercise signature authority in electronic systems.
  • Provide leadership to the IRB, Kolvenbach, and Research and Sabbatical Committees as an ex officio member.
  • Serve as a member of the Council of Academic Directors and provide expertise to other University committees (e.g., Middle States, hiring committees, etc.) as assigned.
  • Manage the Faculty development and ORSP budgets to enhance research activity.


2. Faculty Development and Pre-Award Support
  • Direct efforts to create faculty development resources in the area of grant development.
  • Direct an outreach program that expands grant-writing capacity among faculty members, recognizes faculty scholarly achievements, and keeps faculty apprised of sponsored program opportunities and developments.
  • Work with Deans, Associate Deans, Associate and or Vice Presidents and other leaders to encourage sponsored research activity among faculty.
  • Actively cultivate sponsored research activity among faculty and serve as a primary point of contact for proposal development.
  • Serve as a resource for pre-award activities, including coordinating, reviewing and editing grant proposals and provide counseling and assistance to faculty on strategies for grant acquisition and grant proposal and budget development in accordance with proposal guidelines.
  • Develop and keep abreast of faculty research and programmatic interests to identify funding sources and provide effective counsel.
Required Qualifications
  • Earned bachelor’s degree.
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience and demonstrated expertise in grant procurement and administration.
  • Excellent analytical and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to address complex issues and to negotiate positive resolutions.
  • Knowledge of a complex regulatory environment, especially federal grant and contracts, and research oversight requirements.
  • Knowledge of and experience with federal, state, and other funding systems and processes.
  • Strong customer service orientation and an ability to maintain a harmonious and effective working relationship with supervisor, direct reports, faculty, University/public officials, and students. ·
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to working with faculty, including the ability to persuade and encourage them to seek external funding.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write, review, and edit complex material across a broad range of disciplines.
  • Ability to address complex issues independently and to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Efficient work habits, strong organizational skills, and a superior attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of assessment and data collection for comparative purposes.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as ability to learn the University database system.
  • Ability to support and promote the mission and values of a Catholic Jesuit education, as well as University goals for institution-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • Prior experience in higher education.
