Job Description:

The 12-month full time Physical Therapist and Pediatric Residency Program Director is responsible for providing service for the partnership between Sacred Heart University (SHU) Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences and the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. This position is hired by SHU in collaboration with CT Children's Medical Center with the salary and benefits split equally between the partners.

The purpose of the position is to:

  • Provide a mutually beneficial relationship between SHU and Children's Hospital,
  • Provide high quality physical therapy services to patients/clients at Children's Hospital,
  • Provide high quality professional and post professional physical therapist education to those enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at SHU and the Pediatric Residency Program.
  • Provide leadership, administration, management, and education of residents in the Pediatric Residency Program, along with maintenance of accreditation through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
  • Act as a liaison between SHU and CT Children's Medical Center.

Responsibilities Include:

As a clinical faculty member in the Pediatric Residency Program and Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, this Clinical Faculty staff position requires teaching, scholarship and service:

Teaching:

  • 13.5 credit hours per year is required, as assigned by the DPT Program Director in collaboration with the Semester Coordinator. This may include lectures and/or labs.
  • Collaborates with Children's Hospital administration, Clinical Site Coordinator, staff, SHU faculty, and SHU Clinical Education Coordinators to develop the clinical education component of the DPT Program, including but not limited to creation of curricular content, assignments, assessment, integrated clinical experiences and full-time clinical experiences.

Scholarship:

  • Demonstrates engagement in evidence-based practice
  • Collaborates with faculty and student on research projects when appropriate to content expertise

Service:

  • Participates in faculty meetings and faculty committees
  • Participated in service to the DPT program.

As a physical therapist at Connecticut Children's Medical Center this position requires:

  • ?Patient Care: Direct patient care, patient care conferences, interdisciplinary rounds, patient/family staff education, documentation, billing, coordination of patient care with other health professionals within Children's Hospital.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to rehabilitative staff.
  • Mentoring of residency students when needed.

Pediatric Residency Program Director:

  • Acts as a liaison between SHU and CT Children's Medical Center, including facilitating appropriate management of the partnership.
  • Maintains individual certification and program accreditation by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) in Pediatrics.
  • Oversees the fiscal and clinical management of the program.
  • Recruit and market for the program.
  • Directs program admission (inquires, applications, interviews, offers of admission, and enrollment).
  • Organizes, Coordinates and Directs the learning experience of residents including but not limited to setting residents goals/objectives of residency clinical and educational experiences and activities.
  • Assists with the identification, development, and implementation of research projects.
  • Develops, disseminates, reviews, and updates policies and procedures for the residency.
  • Ensures that there is adequate support staff, services, space, computers, educational resources and equipment for the residency program.
  • Maintains student records including current and previous residents.
  • Coordinates meetings for the Advisory Committee.
  • Ensures adherence to all safety regulations.


Requirements:

Knowledge and Skills Needed:

  • Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree required
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physical Therapist in the State of Connecticut
  • ABPTS Certified Board Clinical Specialist in Pediatrics required.
  • Member of the American Physical Therapy Association required.
  • Completion of a Professional Pediatric Residency Program preferred.
  • Experience in academic teaching in a DPT Program preferred.
  • Management experience with experience in a team-based approach to problem solving preferred.
  • Comfortable in a highly interactive teaching/learning environment that includes collaborative teaching, significant faculty/student interaction and strong clinical integration into curriculum
  • Possess superb interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with key constituents across the department, college, and institution.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including both the ability to listen and to articulate compelling arguments are critical
