This job opening is for one Construction Inspector I or II, depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay.

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties for a Construction Inspector I or II:
- Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
- Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
- Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Drives a state vehicle to monitor project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.
- Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties to qualify as a Construction Inspector II:
- Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
- 4 years in in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience.(Experience can be satis fied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
- 5 years in in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience.(Experience can be satis fied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for a Construction Inspector I or II:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise
- Subject to vibration
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
- Feeling-determining size, shape, temperature or texture of objects
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
- Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

- Required to work weekends and holidays.
