The Community Engagement Specialist (CES) is considered an essential, non-clinical member of a community-based team who will support the most vulnerable members of the East Boston Community. This position will connect both EBNHC patients, as well as those who are not affiliated with EBNHC, to recovery information, and make referrals and linkages to helpful community resources. The overall goal is to reduce risk of harm of those who have a substance use disorder and/or mental health condition (diagnosed or undiagnosed) to engage in services, including harm reduction, detox, counseling, residential care, and other community-based care. This will be a fulltime, 5 days per week position, with occasional evening and weekend shifts.

The CES will maintain ongoing client support regardless of relapse and will serve as a motivator, ally, role model, problem-solver, and advocate for patients. The CES should possess a thorough understanding of the steps to successful recovery, an understanding of community culture to address the barriers to recovery, provide links to community resources, and to use straightforward, recovery-focused language free from clinical jargon and stigma.
The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center is hiring a Community Engagement Specialist. This is a full-time, benefit eligible position. The position is funded by a grant through the Mayor’s Office of Recovery Services.

This position requires good organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part ofa team. Regularly scheduled supervision will be provided. Flexible schedule and hybrid schedule may be available following introductory period.

Education
  • A High School diploma or GED required; Associate’s Degree or higher is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a CCAR approved Recovery Coach Academy before hire, or the successful completion of a CCAR approved Recovery Coach Academy within 4 months of hire.
  • Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) certification required within first 12 months of employment.
Experience
  • Preference for candidates with lived experience with substance use disorders, with at least two-years sustained recovery.
Skills/Abilities
  • Strong advocacy skills along with knowledge of community-based services, resources, and local recovery community.
  • Empathic understanding of patients, including the ability to assess multicultural needs, sensitivity to ethnic, cultural, gender, and sexual orientation diversity, values, beliefs, and behaviors.
  • Demonstrated flexibility with client’s priorities, evolving needs, and goals.
  • Organizational skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, and the internet; requires the ability to research community resources independently and to access and enter data.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English strongly preferred.
