Newberg Public Schools is seeking a communications expert with a broad range of skills to manage the district’s strategic communications. This position provides leadership and direction for full service communication programs that proactively represent the school district. This position reports directly to the superintendent. The 4,200-student district serves the communities of Dundee and Newberg, Oregon.


Description:
Plans and directs a comprehensive system of communication and engagement designed to enhance the District’s educational programs and operations with internal and external audiences.


Requirements Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or closely related field. Three years of recent professional experience in communications and/or public relations including experience at the strategic planning and implementation level; or any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • A working knowledge of internal and external communications and public relations programs for an educational organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and relate to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated skill in effective verbal, written and digital communication.
  • Strong analytical skills in conducting public relations research and information campaign planning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district administrators, staff, various private and public agencies, media, community and other interested groups.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and meet timelines.
  • Ability to manage multiple and diverse projects at the same time.
  • Ability to develop and administer department goals, objectives and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Ability to prepare and manage department budget and resources.
  • Expertise in social media platforms and video content and creation.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Weekly cabinet meetings with District Leadership Team.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate District’s communication and engagement program with internal and external audiences.
  • Develop and produce professional communications to keep staff, parents, media and the general public informed, including publications, webpages, digital media, press releases and social media.
  • Develop communications plans, including crisis and emergency communications plan, detailing how to reach internal and external publics.
  • Participate in developing programs to engage the community in the District’s decision-making process and efforts to increase student achievement.
  • Provide support and advice on communication strategies and messaging.
  • Serve as district information resource and maintain extensive background files.
  • Maintain an on-going and positive relationship with businesses, governmental agencies and the general community.
  • Serves as the media's liaison with the school district.
  • Serve as the district’s liaison to the Newberg Education Foundation.
  • Write news releases, provide information for local media; works to get media coverage of school district news.
  • Create, write and produce district marketing materials
  • Develop and provide training and professional development for district staff to support effective communication.
  • Conduct stakeholder opinion research through surveys, polls and informal research to determine opinion and attitudes as a basis for planning and action, including annual staff, student and parent surveys.
  • Analyze public or community input and recommends strategies to meet needs, concerns, and issues.
  • Supervise and maintain district’s website content, appearance, access and training. Oversee immediate redesign of the district website.
  • Coordinate district and community recognition programs, including annual staff recognition event.
  • Supervise and evaluate the district communication assistant and translator.
  • Develop and administer the department’s annual operating budget.
  • Carry out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, interruptions and new or emergency situations.
  • Create standard protocols for emergencies, closure and other similar events.

Wage:
$84,448 - $112,197 per year
