Job Summary


The DNR is seeking to fill a temporary, part-time (90%) Buildings and Grounds Worker position at Banning State Park. Days and hours of work will vary, and include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Anticipated duration of this temporary position is from late-May through mid-October 2023.

This position exists to complete maintenance of facilities, grounds, buildings and equipment of Banning State Park.

Responsibilities include:

  • To complete grounds maintenance so that park visitors will have a safe and enjoyable experience and natural resources are protected and preserved in a pleasing condition.
  • To complete building maintenance and sanitation tasks so that buildings are safe, clean and attractive, routine damage and wear through use is repaired and park visitors will have a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • To complete maintenance and service and do minor repairs on equipment, tools and shop facilities so that they are safe and in dependable condition for use at all times.
  • Complete facility maintenance and repairs so that facilities and utilities are in safe, useable, clean and attractive condition for park visitors.
  • To complete operational tasks so that visitor’s needs are served, park functions are accomplished, and park resources managed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to provide written information and instructions to the public and other employees.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, tractor, heavy equipment, snowmobile, snow blower, ATV, chain saw, tree planter, stump remover, lawn mower, small hand tools, and other equipment and tools sufficient to perform assigned duties correctly and safely.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions on labels, in instruction manuals, and procedures sufficient to use materials/chemicals correctly and safely.
  • Ability to operate a phone, two way radio, computer, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather and environmental conditions
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including digging, lifting, shoveling, hauling, carrying, bending, pushing, climbing, and walking on uneven terrain. Strength and agility necessary to bend, lift, dig, reach, and load heavy materials.
  • Ability to obtain Advanced Chainsaw (B Faller) Certification.
  • Ability and willingness to work alone, including in remote areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating any of the following: tractor, heavy equipment, snowmobile, snow blower, ATV (all-terrain vehicle), chain saw, tree planter, and/or stump remover.
  • Knowledge of Parks and Trails rules, policies, and facilities.
  • Record keeping skills.
  • Training and/or experience in equipment operation and maintenance, construction methods, and landscape management and materials.
  • First Aid and CPR training.
  • Current Advanced Chainsaw (B Faller) Certification.
  • Work experience with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work: Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
