Position Summary:

APPOINTMENT: Assistant Professor, tenure-track, full-time, 12-month

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Library Affairs, the Social Sciences Librarian provides instruction, multimedia support services, reference, outreach, and library services to the university community.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is a nationally ranked public research university with a population of over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Morris Library holds more than three million volumes and subscribes to a wide range of electronic resources and databases. The library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), and the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). Librarians at SIUC are faculty and are covered by collective bargaining.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as subject specialist to units covering the social sciences, providing formal and informal instruction in library research for these departments and assisting with subject-specific research queries in areas of expertise. Identify opportunities for outreach and strategic partnerships with specific SIU Carbondale departments, based on expertise.
  • Support the library's information literacy program which includes teaching, assessment and developing instructional materials.
  • Assist library users at the Information Desk with research and reference questions, face-to-face and remotely, including limited nights and weekends.
  • Participate in the library's scholarly communications initiatives including population of the Institutional Repository.
  • Conduct scholarly research/creative activity as part of position and promotion and tenure process.
  • Engage in professional activities, including university and library committees and task forces.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library science.
  • Familiarity with or coursework in one of the social sciences.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure, including professional service and published research.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional advanced degree in any social science discipline.
  • Experience with information literacy instruction.
  • Experience providing in-person or online reference service.
