The Assistant Director, LGBTQ+ Resource Center has primary responsibility for developing and implementing programs and services intended to meet the needs of the LGBTQ+ student community. Additionally, the Assistant Director works collaboratively with University departments to serve the unique needs of a variety of historically underrepresented student populations and provide professional development towards cultural competency of Marquette professionals.
As part of a team of student affairs specialists, the Assistant Director assists in the implementation of innovative programming designed to enhance the campus climate and foster an inclusive learning environment. Serves as an advisor, advocate, and resource to LGBTQ+ students and other affinity groups. As a staff member in the Division of Student Affairs, is expected to undertake all responsibilities in a manner that reflects the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the University as well as the principles of student development theory.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop and coordinate student retention programming efforts designed to increase students’ awareness of their own social identity, to educate others in the campus community about the richness of diversity on campus and the issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community, and to encourage student involvement in the Marquette and Milwaukee communities.
2. Advocate for and build relationships with students by being present and visible in the LGBTQ Center
3. Design and implement programs and activities that contribute to the enrichment of the university community and to the development of LGBTQ+ identity (e.g., Coming Out Day, LGBT History Month, Trans Day of Remembrance, April Day of Silence, Lavender Graduation, Pride Prom, Women’s History Month, etc.).
4. Coordinate and assess trainings such as Safer Spaces, Ally Bystander Intervention, and Racial Justice Training.
5. Advise student organizations in the development of programs and activities, provide direction (referrals) and support for the organizations, and serve as a liaison between the organizations and university offices and community organizations. Serve as an advocate, mentor, and educator.
6. Manage the operations of the LGBTQ+ Resource Center to provide a welcoming and safe environment for all students and to respond to their needs for social and academic support.
7. Work to create an inclusive culture within the LGBTQ Center that is open to and welcoming to all Marquette students
8. In concert with other members of the staff team and student leaders, design and implement peer education, leadership development, intercultural education, and social justice programs.
9. Assist in the development and implementation of inclusive policies and procedures impacting LGBTQ+ students.
10. Develop and maintain group mentoring initiatives designed to increase retention and build community (QPOC Group, LGBTQ+ and Ally Discussion Group, etc.).
11. Hire, train and supervise Graduate Assistant(s) and Peer Interns as they support the Center and its stakeholders.
12. Hire, onboard and supervise the DEI Specialist as they support DEI initiatives particularly pertaining to graduate and professional students as well as the Graduate School.
13. Work cooperatively with university departments, faculty, staff, and students to recruit and retain LGBTQ+ and underrepresented students.
14. Monitor and assess the effectiveness of programs to determine future programming and endeavors.
15. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field and at least 5 years of related experience
or
A master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field with at least 3 years of related experience.

Candidates should possess strong oral and written communication skills and commitment to, knowledge of, and experience with LGBTQ+ and multicultural programming.
Expertise and experience in event planning and student focused programming.
Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive matters.

Availability to work some nights and weekends when needed in order to ensure a quality student experience is an expectation for the position.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current issues related to student involvement and engagement, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and student development theories.
Supervision experience with graduate and/or undergraduate student employees
