Job description
The Town of Barnstable (population 45,000) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Architect/Designer I. This position is responsible for providing professional, technical, planning, design, project management, and construction administrative work on a wide variety of projects relating to municipal facilities (buildings, grounds, cemeteries, etc.). May occasionally be required to provide technical and project management services for horizontal or marine infrastructure projects.
Applicants must have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of Architecture, and of the materials, methods and techniques of public works. Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations governing public construction are also required. Must possess the ability to work efficiently and effectively communicate orally, in writing, and presentations with all levels of government and the general public. Successful candidates must also have the ability to plan, design, and manage complex projects, interpret and follow engineering and architectural plan, and the ability to develop and effectively manage construction budgets. Registered Architect License preferred, or at a minimum must be working towards architectural registration.
The Town of Barnstable is made up of seven distinct villages, each with their own unique character: Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable. In addition, Barnstable is considered the “hub” of Cape Cod with the largest healthcare facilities, retail shopping centers and major transportation operations including the Cape Cod Gateway Airport, Cape Cod Regional Transportation Authority that offers bus service, the Steamship Authority that provides passenger and freight services to the Islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Barnstable has a budget of over $200 million and has enjoyed a AAA bond rating for several years.
