Job Title: Hoofstock Animal Care Assistant

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours: Seasonal Part Time


About the role:

We are seeking an energetic and outgoing individual to assist our full time staff in taking care of our Hoofstock and Rhino collection. Position allotted 40 hours per week for 15 weeks. Daily duties include feeding our hoofstock collection, administering medications when necessary, cleaning exhibit yards and barn stalls, maintaining yards (mowing, weedeating), cutting browse, assisting with behind the scenes tours, and engaging the public. Outside most of every day. This role will help you develop your animal keeping skills as well as your time management skills. Must be able to work alone at times or with a large group. Collection includes Giraffe, Okapi, Yellow Back Duikers, Plains Zebra, Eastern Bongo, Sable Antelope, Lesser Kudu, Impala, Cheetahs, White Rhino, Indian Rhino, Takin, Tufted Deer, Pere David Deer, Goral, and Ostrich. This position reports to the Hoofstock Supervisor or Lead Keeper.


Duties and Responsibilities
(include but not limited to):

  • Assist Full-time keepers in taking care of the Hoofstock collection.
  • Clean and Maintain the barns and exhibits, keeper areas and diet prep areas.
  • Complete training and enrichment logs daily.


Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Computer skills needed for data entry
  • Good communication skills required

Candidates might be required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative TB test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.


Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.
  • Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
  • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 90 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods. Will require to dump barrels.
